Good afternoon traders,
I've not posted for a while but I have been trading. I've made a few thousand pounds which made my wife very happy as she benefited with the arrival of new jewellery, always a plus in the 'good husband' column!
I'm a mood writer & post only when I feel motivated to do so, hence the lack of posts lately.
I'm thrilled to report that after 2 1/2 years I'm finally trading profitably. It's been a long road and cost me plenty in money & time but it's given me the opportunity to supplement my income from spread betting the financial markets.
Im still respectful and wary of how the markets can decimate a position & this healthy respect for the market means the huge losses of previous years are not repeated. I'm trading a smaller size position & showing more patience for entry points. In my experience playing within your account size is infinitely more important that a stop loss. Nearly all my trades are in the direction of the 5 year trend which means I'm buying the dips.
I'm still prone to closing winning trades too early but that's the next step in my trading evolution. I trade Dow, S & P and occasionally DAX and very rarely FTSE100 and just one index at a time.
That's it. No forays into forex, no 5 minute binary bets, just those indices.
I spent two years making every mistake a new trader does, a few examples: trading way too big for my account, trading multiple positions, adding to losing positions.
Now I have rules about my stakes. Maximum ever is £20 point on Dow, £200 point on S & P and I split those into half at a time. I have two entry points and risk £10 point on the Dow at my first entry & add the other £10 at my second entry. Some will read this & say I'm adding to a losing trade but half stake at a time is working for me.
The key to ramping my winnings up is not a bigger stake but in letting my winning trades run. That's a challenge for me & one I will master. I lost a lot of money in year 1, almost as much in year 2 and I'm up slightly in year 3. I'm making good progress but I'm aware I'm only ever one mistake from wiping out again & the pain & disgust that caused I'm using positively to avoid ever repeating. The markets are brutal & ultimately spread betting is gambling but I remain convinced I will earn very well from trading in this manner & it will make a huge difference to my ability to live well & provide for my family.
For the near future I feel Dow is holding above 17000 & S & P has climbed above 1980 again after a dip in the low 1960's. That tells me that buyers are stepping in at those levels & therefore it's reasonable to expect Dow to challenge 17300 again & S & P 2000.....
If we dip below those levels I shall be watching like a hawk for a long entry.
Good luck & I'll update again sooner rather than later.
Follow my journey (and amuse yourself at my expense) as I attempt to take money from the markets daily. I'm 50, a father of three boys, I live in London and I work for myself. I started trading the FTSE at the end of May 2012. My goal is to earn £500 a day scalping 10 points at £50/point inside 4 hours trading from my kitchen.

Dow 4 hourly
The ascending line is a perfect upward trend support since Feb 3rd this year. Its signalling for me to go long at 16730 so I shall be watching like a hawk today on the 5 min candles for support if we drop on the open.

Thursday update
Playing the markets can be a devil, a deliciously tantalising, teasing bastard of a demonic fucker.
You can make the right call but be wrong short term and margin out (been there) or you can miss out on a trade and feel desperately frustrated at missing the profit from being right.
The latter is how I'm feeling right now. I wanted the DOW to break 17000 (my previous post called for some heat to come out of the market at that point) and I would have been short to 16750. Earlier today within half an hour of the market opening we slumped to 16742. Currently we're on a rise and at 16840.
I'm not going long from here. My call earlier in the week was for a short from around 17070 and today's drop meant my target would have been hit. A lovely trade of 300 points gone begging.
HOWEVER......
I'm not going long from here. If we creep up and break 17000 I'm still of a mind to action the trade I called although perhaps I'll wait for a little higher before taking a short due to this weeks action. I'm watching carefully to see where tomorrow leads before making a trade. If we test todays low (unlikely as buying was so strong) I'll let it play out and make a decision. As previously stated if we slip towards 16500 or even remotely threaten it I'll be all over it like Luis Suarez on human flesh.
Successful trading and I'll catch up with you again soon.

Thoughts for this week on DOW
Morning,
When I make my trades again I shall mainly be working on longer timeframes, a couple of days or so rather than minutes. I shall still be scalping occasionally but closing immediately if it goes against me for the loss of just a handful of points. Most scalps go in my favour
We're very close to 17000, been knocking on the door this month without breaking through. From past observations when it does break we'll shoot through for 30 to 40 points within half an hour. I'll be watching closely and will go long when we do for just a very short term scalp, maybe minutes.
My next trade will be to go short for a slightly longer term pullback. I'll be watching for 17070 and I believe 16750 is the best we can retrace to as the market naturally takes a breather and short term speculators take a profit. I'd be tempted to take at 16950 initially.
Slightly longer term we can comfortably retrace to 16500 on a bit of a panic, maybe Iraq or some other sell off trigger and at that point I'd be long for 500 points.
Certainly for the time being I remain bullish as long as the index shows new highs.
FTSE has been range bound for quite some time, I'm not interested in playing.

Good Afternoon, I'm back!
I just couldn't ignore my itch any longer.
The break has given me so much time and distance to evaluate my trading and my life. To give up on something when I've invested so much time and money in an effort to understanding it would be stupid and a complete waste.
I'm not altogether sure the format these posts will take or even if I will blog every day, for now it's enough to know that I'm as determined as ever and wiser, infinitely more experienced.
Enjoy your weekend and I'll update on the other side.

My thoughts 3 months on
Hello,
I'm still getting over 500 page views a month so I thought I'd post.
I've got an itch (no not that sort).
I've been keeping an eye on the index these last few days. When it peaked at over 15600 I fancied it to retrace over 100 points and it duly has.
Am I tempted?
Yes.
Will I return?
Not yet.
I'm enjoying my day job. The attention I'm able to give my business has paid dividends in spades, I've made good money and it's no accident that it's happened because I'm able to focus on one thing only and therefore do it well. That focus will remain 100% on my business for now. If at a distant time in the future I do decide to trade it will be on a longer time frame. We recently had 7 or so days of green bars, that can't last and so it proved, a dip was inevitable and that's without knowing any news.
I hope you're having success with your trading and wish you well.
Catch up again soon.
Me.

My thoughts 6 weeks on
I'm writing impulsively (it's 4pm and I'm winding down work for the day) as the idea of posting an update suddenly appealed to me so unfortunately for you here I am :)
I'm really happy to report I've moved on very quickly. There's no point torturing myself about the loss, I tried something, it didn't work and I've moved on. I've immersed myself in my day job and am seeing positive results.
Writing anonymously allows me to be liberal with figures I wouldn't otherwise share with you, my purpose in doing so is to illuminate the context on my losses. Last month I made just a shade under £7000 which is double what I need to pass go. This is the perfect antidote to my trading losses and just the required response. I need to repeat that over the rest of this year and I'll be in a very good place.
I've been amazed at the figures for this blog, yesterday for example there were over 60 page views and given the fact I haven't posted for near on 6 weeks that's quite something. Now, I wouldn't want my experiences to put anyone off if they see trading as an opportunity, it may well work for you so if it does please post a comment and let everyone who visits here know. At the every least if you're thinking of trading or are a new trader then please read through my entire story, it cost me a lot of money to write and someone should benefit from it!
For two weeks after my loss I didn't even look at a newspaper and having deleted every trading reference from my iPhone I was in the dark. I can see now the index has recovered and is heading upwards again but for me it makes no difference. If I had 10 times the balance in my account I'd probably have been playing at £500 point so my character disqualifies me from ever playing this game again.
If there's one thing I'm sure of it's that you have to know what makes you tick and be brutally honest with yourself. I'm now really enjoying life, I don't have to watch Bloomberg or any trading newsfeeds, twitter accounts and I'm loving the freedom of not finishing at 9pm which was the case when trading the into the close.
Catch you later.......

My final post
I lost £26'000 last week.
If you're here to gloat or say I told you so please keep it to yourself. This is my last ever post and so I shan't be replying. I'm posting because trading and this blog was a big part of my life for 20 months and I need closure to enable me to move on.
I gave this my all. I devoted so much time and energy in educating myself. I invested 20 months, thousands of hours and £55'000 into trading in an effort to open up a new horizon for myself.
It's not for me, I know that now. I'm too enthusiastic, I play too big for my account, my money management and attitude to risk is poor and I don't cut losing trades quickly enough.
The way I see it I only have one life. I reached 50 and although I run my own business and earn a decent living it doesn't afford me the luxury of doing things for my family the way I would like to, that's why I looked at trading. It's possible to make really good money on your own terms but I know with all my experience and every ounce of wisdom I have mustered that it's not going to work for me.
A man has to know his limits, I'm not a gambler, I never have been and I don't enjoy it. This was a bold stretch at a new career move, it didn't work and now I know it for sure.
This loss hurts and it will take me probably two years to get back on an even keel yet I'm glad I gave it a go. I have lost good money, a LOT of money but the upshot is it has helped me appreciate that what I do have is a GOOD small business that provides me with a living on my own terms and I'm so grateful for that.
I shall now apply myself to my business with the same passion and enthusiasm I have devoted to my trading.
Thanks for keeping me company on my journey, anyone who takes money out of the markets is a hero.
That's it.
Me!

Nice long weekend all?
2.35pm
I've kicked off today with a £300 scalp, sets the day up nicely, we're currently holding just above 16500 having peaked at 16550 premarket so I expect a little bounce from here. More later....
7pm
Huh, how manipulated was that? Forget the bounce we dropped almost 200 points after my update! We've climbed 100+ points since low of day and are working our way back nicely. I have a long open that I'm leaving overnight, my account is comfortably large enough to carry the margin and I'll update later.

Thursday as it happened (+£179)
Today's profit £179
Year to date £2314
2.50pm
So far a very small scalp for £135. We're currently hovering around 16410 but I fully expect to test 16450 again today, perhaps even as high as 16480 with a low of 16380. As yesterday I'm going to exit my platform and reopen later this afternoon. More later.....
4pm
Okay so we've almost hit my expected low of the day at 16385 but I'm still not comfortable going long. I'm going to wait to see a supportive candle or two before clicking my button, More later....
5.30pm
I'm £179 to the good so far in today's trading but I don't see much action and neither guessing nor gambling are my style. We've seen a low of 16372 but only managed to kick up to 16418. I'll keep an eye out for movement, I'd be especially keen if I see a retest and hold of 16370 (double bottom) but I'm pretty sure I shan't be involved further today. More later....
6.20pm
Right, that's it for today, I've better things to do than stare at a motionless screen, thanks for your company, I've enjoyed it.

Wednesday as it happened (+£545)
Today's profit £545
Year to date £2135
2.40pm
Welcome to Wednesday. I've had a little tickle already to the tune of £135 but I don't have any conviction to direction today so I'm just going to watch for a while.
16400 offered good support over the last few days until we crashed through it so it's possible it may be a resistance level. I think it wise to hold my enthusiasm for half an hour to see what unfolds. In an effort to achieve this I'm going to turn my platform off and re-open at 3pm.
If we get a drop towards 16350 I'm comfortable going long for a few points. If we're close to 16450 I'll feel comfortable going short. More later.....
5.45pm
I've had a good day and true to my word I closed my platform and actually didn't open it until gone 5pm by which time it had rocketed 125 points to 16500. It was obvious to me there would be a small retracement even if it continues higher, there's always a battle at a round number between bulls and bears as it's so psychologically significant.
I shorted at £50 point for 8 points and so I've my best day of the year so far.
'till tomorrow.

Tuesday as it happened (+£260)
Today's Profit £260
Year to date £1590
2.20pm
I've been talking about a pullback for some time and yesterday we got it.
Last Monday (a week ago) I mentioned 16250 as a figure I'd be comfortable going long from. During the course of the last week I revised that upward to 16350 so when we hit that yesterday I took a position for £30 point looking to hold until the end of the week. Currently we're hovering around 50 points shy of that and I've been scalping around the position.
I expect another dip on the open possibly to test 16270 (maybe 16250) before buyers are tempted. More later.....
4.45pm
We've had a good rise to 16340 which has allowed me to close my longs on the way for a manageable loss on my 16350 long but as I've also been scalping around my positions I close the day in profit to the tune of £260. I could have panicked when we fell to 16250 yesterday but I've learned from past mistakes and kept faith with the way I saw the market.
Onwards and upwards!

Monday as it happened (+£200)
Today's profit £200
Year to date £1330
10.30am
Morning, hope you had a nice weekend. 16400 has held so far but I'm expecting a dip today to test 16350, possible lower. Poor jobs data Friday and the recent surge higher should (should!) mean we struggle to get meaningfully higher this week although as ever I'll only trade according to price action.
I believe this market goes higher but buyers know prices have stalled and if I was looking to buy a tranche of shares in a company I'd be waiting to see just how low I could get them for, once we bottom out though expect a sharp rise, this could be towards the middle/end of the week.
So my trading plan today is to wait 10-15 minutes after market opens and if the market drops I'll buy on a supportive candle. As always more later............
2.50pm
£130 scalped so far and I've taken a £5 point long on USD/JPY for the day as the drop is imho overdone. More later..........

3pm
Okay all positions closed and I'm £200 up for the day.
'till tomorrow.
Friday, 10 January 2014
Friday as it happened (+£295)
Today's profit £295
Year to date £1130
Afternoon,
I've won a few points going long on the drop when we got the NFP figures at 1.30pm. I still have to learn to let winning trades run as I closed way too early, I'm having a good week but it could be so much better. More later.....
2.38pm
Okay that's it for today, another very small scalp at £30 point means I have achieved over £1000 profit for the week, I'm very happy with that and so I'm going to enjoy my weekend without the risk of undoing my week's work and making a dent in my profits.
Have a good weekend all. I've decided not to post my weekly review or my prediction this weekend, I'm going to enjoy a full weekend without blogging.
See you Monday.
PS I couldn't help see a drop to 16380 which has held on a few tests so took a small long for an additional £115 profit today.
Nice weekend all....

Thursday as it happened (+£100)
Today's Profit £100
Year to date £835
Afternoon all,
Looking at the daily candles we seem to finding support at 16400 but given we have NFP tomorrow a poor showing could see us dropping below this so I'm ultra cautious today.
I've made a couple lightning fast scalps at £30 point for £75 today and even though it looks like we're holding at 16470 I'd be more comfortable going long from the 16450 so for now I'm out.
2.55pm
Okay so I'm done for the day, a profit of £100 is exactly what I was after today, a figure that should be easily attainable with minimum effort and exposure.

Wednesday as it happened (+£100)
Today's profit £100
year to date £735
Evening,
I'm very busy on my day job, I've come back to unbelievable orders so have been unable to devote any meaningful time to trading. Looks like that's actually benefiting me.
I opened my platform at 8pm and only took 4 scalps today, 3 successful and only played £10 point.
I've taken the money and I'm saying less is most definitely more where trading is concerned for me.
'till tomorrow.

Tuesday as it happened (+£135)
Today's Profit £135
Year to date £635
Although I'm expecting a pullback I had a feeling today may surprise so I sat and watched, no trading until 7pm.
After a 120+ point rise it's perfectly natural for the DOW to take a breather so I took a small £10 point short for £80 and another an hour later for just under 2 points at £30 point.
I'm enjoying my ability not to be always involved and I'm drawing my profit daily.
'til tomorrow

Monday as it happened (+£500)
Today's Profit £500
Happy new Year!
2014 sounds ridiculous to me as I vividly remember writing 1968 in my school diary in pencil :)
I'm back, refreshed, relaxed and enthusiastic about my trading prospects for the year. My New Year's resolution is to believe in my calls and stick with my decision regardless of what I hear from other people.
I know enough now to make money at this game, the areas identified for improvement are belief in my reading of the markets and to let winning trades MUCH longer.
The DOW has had a meteoric rise since tapering was announced and got a little ahead of itself in the run in to year end so I simply shorted today @ £30 point and picked up a nice day's wage. I've been away for the weekend and placed my trade as I was leaving a midlands hotel (premarket) and closed it half way down the M40, all done on my mobile phone.
We're currently sitting just above 16400 and although I'm bullish this market I need to see a pullback (possibly to 16250) before being really comfortable buying, in the meantime I think I'll short any rallies. A close above 16600 would also have me buying.
Good luck with your trading this year.
